Why do Women Feel Nausea During Periods

Let’s be real – Periods and girls are not exactly best friends. The hormonal wonderland called menstruation causes severe cramps and mood swings. On top of that, this monthly party can be accommodated by the company of nausea too. Nausea during periods is normal and can be a result of hormonal changes. Let’s see in detail the possible causes of this condition.

  • Dysmenorrhea or painful cramps: This is caused by increased uterine contractions due to prostaglandins. These higher levels of prostaglandins also affect the other parts of the body including the digestive tract. This leads to abdominal discomfort and nausea.

  • Premenstrual Syndrome: PMS involves emotional and physical symptoms before periods. This is caused by hormonal fluctuations during periods. PMS can involve breast soreness, diarrhea, constipation, bloating, headache, mood swings, anxiety, etc. The gastrointestinal symptoms during PMS can lead to nausea.

  • The Gut-Brain Connection: The enteric nervous system, sometimes called the “Second Brain” controls the digestive system. During menstruation, stress and discomfort due to cramps, pain, or hormonal changes can potentially trigger this gutbrain connection leading to nausea.

Every individual’s body is different and not all menstruators experience nausea during periods. For those who do, understanding the potential causes can help. If you regularly experience severe or persistent nausea during periods, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable. Remember, the menstrual cycle is a natural process and while some discomfort is normal it shouldn’t overshadow your overall health and well-being.
