Reasons for Urine leakage during exercise

Exercise is a mood-boosting activity for all of us unless our body gets into an unscheduled hydration break called leakage. If you are wondering whether it’s normal, remember that there are 200 million people struggling with this across the globe. In scientific terms, this is called, Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). It is defined as the involuntary leakage of urine upon exertion such as during coughing, sneezing, or physical activity. The sphincter muscles in the urethra normally remain contracted to store the urine in the bladder. When we are ready to urinate, these sphincter muscles relax for the easy flow of urine. In the case of SUI, any kind of pressure on the bladder can result in premature sphincter muscle relaxation and cause urine leakage.

In this blog, we’ll specifically delve into the reasons behind urine leakage during exercise

  • Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations especially during menopause or pregnancy can weaken the pelvic floor muscles and can lead to SUI.

  • Exercises increasing Intra-Abdominal Pressure: Exercises such as jumping, skipping, or heavy lifting can increase the intra-abdominal muscles and stress the pelvic floor muscles causing urine leakage.

  • Dehydration: Inadequate hydration can lead to increased salt concentration in the urine. This can irritate the bladder and cause incontinence.

  • Age: As we age the muscles controlling the bladder function weaken causing incontinence.

  • Weak Pelvic Floor Muscles: The pelvic floor muscles are crucial for maintaining bladder control. Weak pelvic floor muscles can lead to inadequate support for the bladder leading to urine leakage.

SUI should not stop anyone from gaining the benefits of physical activity. Proper hydration, emptying the bladder before the workout, moderation between high and low-impact exercises, and consulting the doctor, when required, can help in managing and preventing SUI.

Regularly practicing pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) can be of great help. Remember, when the bladder gives leaks, do Kegels.
